President Obama got a slight bounce in his approval ratings following the Haitian earthquake and his actions to help the people of that island nation who, I would say, would not be in such a situation if they had a little more liberty in their lives. The death and damage was all attributable to the poverty the Haitian people experience because they simply are not free enough to advance their own conditions. I say this because large earthquakes hit other regions like Los Angeles and while there is damage and death it is no where on the scale like we saw in Haiti.
The 1994 Northridge earthquake in California was 6.7 on the Richter Scale and the death total was just 72 with 9,000 injuries. Meanwhile in Haiti the 7.0 quake that just hit is seeing a death total so astronomically higher that it is mind boggling. To those that call this sort of comparison, “politicizing,” the tragedy you just have to get over it. If telling the truth is a crime or offends you then you deserve to be offended.
Tracking the Rasmussen Presidential Approval Index we see that following the quake on January 12th, and as U.S. aid started to flow a couple of days later, President Obama’s ratings improved slightly. But again it was only slight with the index improving from -14 the day of the quake to a best of -11. Now, as he is out there proposing more government regulation, unconstitutional regulation at that, on the banking system and new taxes his rankings have tanked again just like the stock market and our 401ks in recent days.
As of today’s polling he stood at a -19 differential between strongly approve and strongly disapprove. Overall 55% say they disapprove. It looks like the Haitian Bounce is over.
The only thing holding President Obama up from going even lower is delusional Americans who want so badly to believe in Obama that they just cannot bring themselves to admit to who and what he is.
