Should political parties, which are private organizations of private individuals, be forced to allow people not affiliated with the party to decide who a party’s candidate is? Should wovles get a say in the security measures of the hen house? Should Islamic Terrorists get a say in how we screen for Jihadis at airports? The point of these questions is clear. Should people that are perhaps hostile to a legitimate group have a say in how that group operates?
In Rhode Island “unaffiliated” voters are allowed to vote in the primaries for a political party they have deliberately and intentionally chosen not to associate with. As long as they are not registered with another political party they can show up and take their pick. You might as well give the wolf the key and his pick of the hens.
The problems with such an insane policy are obvious to people looking at the issue clearly. Think about all the problems that would have ensued following the Civil War and as the hard core racists among the Democratic Party were forming the KKK. As long as they denounced their party affiliation on paper they could have voted for weak or even proslavery RINO Republicans in the Republican Party primaries and caused all sorts of havoc to try and undermine thier political enemies who happened to believe that enslaving men and women based on the color of their skin was wrong.
However the GOP wants to change all this and liberals in Rhode Island are upset by the GOP’s move to close off their primary, although it is just being discussed and no official decision has been made. Liberals after all do not care much for people being free to associate and for these groups to have a say in how they are proceeding as long as they are not violating some right of someone else. No, these liberals are upset, even though they vastly out number Republicans in the state, that they will not be able to meddle with the opposition’s selection of the candidates they prefer.
The question is what is so wrong with groups like the GOP or even the DNC setting its own rules and selecting its own candidates without interference from outside parties and persons? I really do not see anything wrong with it if you ask me. If you want to vote in the party’s primary then join that party. That is not too much to ask.
