Most of the time reading an AP article is like weeding through the tortured logic of a two year old trying to convince a parent why they deserve a candy bar while standing in the check out line. It has always been an open debate between myself and my friends as to whether the AP just hires bad “journalists” and “editors” of if they really try on purpose to put a fast on over on the reader.
Here is another good example to add fodder to this debate. In an article titled, “Lieberman resists Medicare buy-in plan,” by Calvin Woodward the author makes this bizarre assertion:
WASHINGTON (AP) – Risking the wrath of Democrats, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., threatened Sunday to join Republicans in opposing health care legislation if it permits uninsured individuals as young to 55 to purchase Medicare coverage.
Lieberman, whose vote is critical to the bill’s prospects, expressed his opposition twice during the day: first in an interview with CBS, and more strongly later, according to Democratic officials, in a private meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Reid, who is hoping to pass the legislation by Christmas, needs 60 votes to overcome Republican objections, and has been counting on Lieberman to provide one.
The first and last sentences are important because here we see Mr. Woodward setting up opposition to the plan to socialize America’s health care system even more than it already is as a Republican versus Democrat thing only. What is not mentioned is the reality of the situation in that the American public, not to mention our Constitution, is so against this plan that it has nothing to do with such trivial attempts to boil it down to a partisan issue between the two major political parties.
Reporting on this issue could be so much better if the facts were just presented. Their omission is indicative of an attempt to paint a false picture if you ask me. Either that or just someone that needs to go back to journalism school and learn some basics.
