Congressional Democrats Losing Independents

With only 46% of Americans giving Congress a “Fair” or better rating (4% “Excellent, 12% “Good”, 30% “Fair”) things are not looking good headed into the 2010 elections. Especially with 53% rating their performance as “Poor”. That rating is even more disturbing to members of Congress considering where the current standing of the “generic ballot” where only 38% of Americans favor Democrats over Republicans. 42% favor the GOP.

Of course I have never liked Rasmussen’s scale of Excellent, Good, Fair and Poor since it has three “possitive” answers and only one “negative” answer. “Fair” might be argued to be neutral, but I don’t buy it and I would much rather see a scale used of the more standard:
Strongly Approve
Somewhat Approve
Neutral
Somewhat Disapprove
Strongly Disapprove

That would give better results and more interesting ones I believe from years of personal experience reading and interpreting polls.

Democrats are in even bigger trouble when you consider the reaction of unafilliated voters, a group Democrats need in order to win election. 72% of them according to this poll gave Congress a “Poor” rating. Only 64% of Republicans gave such a response.

With those kinds of numbers against you, it can be a bloody day in November 2010 for the Democratic Party if things do not change. And while the Republicans are certainly preferable to the Democrats, not much will likely change after that blood bath. But we can always hope … at least that is what President Obama said!
