The Washington Times this morning has an article featuring Dr. Shirley, a doctor from Jackson, Mississippi, who wants people who do not like the governments current attempts to further socialize our health care system to burn their Medicare cards. The reason? Well, Medicare is socialized medicine and judging by the number of elderly folks showing up at town halls to confront representatives a lot of Americans, as I have often pointed out, are perfectly happy to have their hands in the cookie jar but will fight tooth and nail to keep other people from taking money out of the pot. Dr. Shirley is apparently in favor of of a government run plan to cover the uninsured. And like a good little socialist thinks that people should be allowed to enforce things on other people. In a brochure for the event he invites people who do not have a Medicare card to, “bring Mama’s or Grandmama’s.” In other words, steal their card.
Mr. Shirley, the article states, “has done extensive work in trying to extend health care to the uninsured.” The problem is that the uninsured often have little money to pay the bills they rack up so there really is not much money in doing something. More correctly the article should state that Mr. Shirley wants to get paid for health care he extends to the uninsured and one of the ways to do that is to get government bureaucrats to send him a check every time he sees one of them. Yep, that is what it amounts to because if he REALLY cared about bringing health care to the uninsured he would do it for whatever price that service would garner. But that is usually little or nothing.
Once again we see one of my Laws of Liberalism on display. Liberals are very generous people, but only with other people’s money. When it comes to their time and money? Heck, they are owed something for their time and energy just like the rest of us.
The dirty little secret is that doctors and hospitals around this country give away oodles of “free” health care to people that cannot afford to pay, or people on one of the myriad of already existing government health care programs which will not pay for a given procedure. And you know who pays for it? You do if you have insurance.
But it is so good of Dr. Shirley to bring up Medicare which is one of our current socialized medicine systems. Why is it good that he brings it up? Because Medicare proves government run medicine’s failures. The program is heading for bankruptcy without higher taxes or lower benefits. The program also already has doctors scrambling to not accept any more patients under the plan because of the low reimbursement rates. Want more of the same problems? Then start another government run system to stack on top of it. Every one started everywhere around the world has the exact same problems no matter how hard liberals try. They never have enough money and they fail to provide adequate treatment because bureaucrats start making all sorts of proclamations about what money will and will not be spent on. They also often stop you from paying out of your own pocket even if you can because to do so would mean someone gets more and further proves how badly their plans have failed.
Yes, I know the arguments about why Medicare is not the same from those on the program but against plans for another program now being proposed by Congress. While Seniors on the program today did pay a tax into the system years ago, that money has been mostly spent. Today the system is funded by the taxes of the next generation of Seniors. It’s unconstitutional too since the Constitution has no authority within its words for the government to administer such a program. Dr. Shirley is right that Americans should burn their Medicare cards but not for the reasons he wants them to. They should burn their cards to tell the federal government enough is enough.
But that would require taking their hands out of the cookie jar and would certainly be painful for many that never bothered to plan for their future because they believed the lie that government would always be there to help them out.
Dr. Shirley is indeed right that these folks are “hypocrites” but he is worse. He is a socialist fool. And the world is littered with the dead bodies from a long line of socialist fools that have tried to implement their ways.
