Do Not Be Afraid Of The Radical Hispanic Woman

For the better part of the days since Sonia Sotomayer was announced as President Obama’s pick for the Supreme Court I have been telling weak kneed conservatives (i.e. moderates, i.e. liberals) who are afraid to take her on over her ideology because of her race and sex that they need to grow a spine. Repeatedly I have reminded people that the same left wingers today singing Sotomayor’s praises where the same ones that maliciously attacked another Hispanic nominee because he was *gasp* a right leaning, constitutionalist judge. That man was Miguel Estrada and he was nominated by President George W. Bush.

This entire issue is also sticking around in the media as well it should. Like this report by Byron York in the Washington Examiner:

Unless something entirely unforeseen happens, confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor will be a lovefest for the Democrats who run the Senate Judiciary Committee. There will be much talk about Sotomayor’s historic opportunity to become the first Hispanic on the Court, about her inspiring background, and about the sterling qualifications she would bring to the job. Sotomayor will have the majority party strongly on her side, and odds are things will end happily for her.

For some Republicans, however, it will be hard to avoid thinking back a few years, to a confirmation hearing that didn’t end happily at all. In 2001, President George W. Bush nominated former Justice Department lawyer Miguel Estrada to a seat on the federal courts of appeals. In that instance, as today, the nominee was was a Hispanic with a compelling story and impressive qualifications. And some of the very people who are today praising Sotomayor spent their time devising extraordinary measures to kill Estrada’s chances.

Correction Mr. York, Sotomayer does not have “impressive qualifications.” That is unless you count racist and sexist rhetoric about being superior to white men, vacuous and bumbling opinions, and a history of idiocy while on the bench talking about how the second amendment does not apply to the states as, “impressive qualifications.”

Every time a liberal anti-intellectual tries to claim that opposition to Ms. Sotomayor is because of her race or gender, just remind them that conservative leaning (if not conservative through and through) Presidents like George Bush nominated Hispanics and women for important positions within the government in the past and ask them how they explain that little problem with their feeling process.
