On Historic Events And Their Worth To Be Celebrated

I have been getting some emails asking me if I will be taking time out of my busy day to listen to the bloviating and mindless spew that will be gushing forth from Washington today as Americans swoon over more of the same repackaged as “change.”. Just in case you cannot tell, my answer to these questions is that I will certainly not be giving those events any more worth than they are warranted and I will certainly not interrupt my day helping to keep America running to fawn over soaring rhetoric with no substance.

Of course there is nothing new with this approach of mine. I didn’t interrupt my day for any of George W. Bush’s or Bill Clinton’s inaugurations either. Hey, someone has got to work around here. And once I accept that responsibility I certainly do not have time to swoon and be immaculated all over in an orgy.

But isn’t today’s swearing in of Barack Obama an historic event worthy of celebrating you ask? Sure, it is historic as are lots of events. But being an historic event should not be the marker of worth as to whether or not something should be celebrated. Hitler killing the Jews was historic too, but you will never convince me to celebrate him for it.

So you can take time out of the day to swoon if you like, but count me out.
