I May Have Found My Candidate – Alan Keyes

I have been searching high and low for a candidate I can support in the 2008 elections for President even though he may not be on the ballot here in Pennsylvania. Obama is out because he is an un-American Marxist. McCain is out because he is someone that has shown he is not above destroying our God given liberties. Baldwin and Barr are out because they are insane when it comes to foreign policy and are blatantly lying about the process of going to war with Iraq, readily insult our soldiers (at least Baldwin does) and claiming the process was unconstitutional because they simply do not agree with it.

Alan Keyes has been nominated by the American Independent Party in California to run for the Presidency and has knocked Chuck Baldwin off the ballot in that state since the Constitution Party relied on their allegiance with the AIP to retain that position.

The AIP platform contains several points which I agree with. Some things, such as the promotion of a federal marriage amendment (which I believe is an unconstitutional attempt at government interfering with religion) I disagree with.

Alan Keyes believes in the war on terror and on Iraq in specific is certainly level headed saying that, “Since we have drawn the sword, our primary purpose ought to be to strike hard at the enemy, which in the aftermath of 9/11 means those who practice or abet terrorism. It’s debatable whether our blow against Saddam Hussein effectively aimed at them, but there is surely no dispute that this is the proper aim of military action. Those who help us to achieve it, in Iraq and elsewhere, in effect demonstrate their opposition to terrorism, and help us to promote the alternative of respect for human moral worth.

But the aim of war is first to damage and defeat the foe. If in the process we help the Iraqis to take some steps toward a permanent regime of liberty, that will be a good thing. But it should not be our measure for the success or failure of our efforts.” From Part 4: The moral basis for the war on terror

While I may have minor quibbles with him about Iraq – this is probably the first sensible opinion I have heard on the topic from any candidate currently in the race other than John McCain, who I cannot vote for due to his record on other issues.

The party and Mr. Keyes believe in securing our borders saying, “our current political leaders appear to have embarked on a strategy of demographic subversion that will dethrone the American people as presently constituted and replace them with a majority more easily dominated and controlled by wealthy or bureaucratically powerful elites. They are working toward the day when the American people look and behave more like the people of Mexico “” who have never achieved sovereign control of their government, despite the outward forms of democratic self-government.” From Part 6: Sovereignty or submission

I still have some more vetting to do of Mr. Keyes because while I do certainly know a lot about him, I do not know enough to formally endorse him at this time. But be aware, that I may have finally found the candidate that I can actually support in November – much to the dismay of McCain supporters, so-called “conservatives” and pseudo-libertarians everywhere who I am sure I can count on to come here and tell me why I am wrong and why their poor candidates are better.
