Californians are so worried about the hoax of man made Global Warming that they are willing to institute layers upon layers of new bureaucracy on themselves to elevate their worries. Now, all new cars sold in the state will need to have a sticker on them giving them a rating in terms of environmental friendliness:
SACRAMENTO, California “” The state of California will require all 2009 model and later cars to be labeled with stickers giving their global warming score, starting at the beginning of the year. The labels will rate vehicles on a scale of 1-10 “” with 10 being the best and 5 an average number “” based on direct emissions and emissions related to fuel production, and will let consumers make comparisons between models.
However, notice that according to this report it does not take into account the impact of all the energy and pollution that went into producing the vehicle which is something that “environmentally friendly” cars like the Prius have come under fire concerning.
Oops! But this sort of information will not be included in the calculation because it doesn’t comport with the talking points right?
Link to the Complete “Dust to Dust” Study.
Now I’ve heard all the conspiracy theories about this study (it came from a GM funded agency therefore it cannot be trusted, that people don’t like how life cycle estimates were calculated even though they used the manufacturer stated life cycles for different vehicles, etc.) and while there are certainly some potential criticisms of the study it is about as scientifically valid as you can get considering that all cars are indeed different and often comparing them is like comparing red apples to green apples.
So let’s look at the facts:
“First, none of our income comes from oil companies and only a small fraction of our subscribers are auto companies or related suppliers. Most of our subscribers are government agencies (state and federal), Wall Street brokerage houses (unrelated to automotive), universities, publishing companies (such as Meredith and Time Inc.), etc.
Among those auto companies that subscribe are both Toyota and General Motors. Both pay the same amount for a subscription. And since we do not perform research for any specific company, neither has generated more income to CNW than the other. Combined they represent a very, very small fraction of our total revenue (less than $5,000) and no more or less than any other auto company.” – CNW Marketing Research
The fact that companies pay money for this data tells me that they think the data has at least some validity. Otherwise why pay for it?
Also if you look at where all different models and manufacturers fall, you will find that everything from different models of Chevys to Hyundais are on the low end and the high end of the study which seems to invalidate most of these conspiracy theories.
But back to the original point of this post – the new requirements on California sold cars. Why is California doing this? I would bet dimes to donuts that this is just another step in their “progressive” plans to levy higher taxes and fees on people they deem not to be acting appropriately (i.e. buying the right car, living in the right home, consuming the right food, etc.). Just wait and see.
