Generic Ballot: Dems Flat, Reps Gaining
The “Generic Ballot” question has always bothered me. If you don’t know what a “generic ballot” poll is, it is where people are asked basically which party they will tend to support in the election without a candidate’s name attached. This allows everyone to feel really good about their party of choice and envision their perfect candidate and thus support their party free of any thought or even guilt.
Rasmussen’s latest generic ballot poll shows that the generic Democrats, over the past year have not gained much of anything while generic Republicans are in fact gaining in support:
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that, if the Congressional Election were held today, 44% of American voters say they would vote for the Democrat in their district and 40% would opt for the Republican.
A year ago it was 45% Democrat to 35% Republican.
Take it for what this is worth. Once you start attaching actual names to these questions, all bets are off.
