Congressman Couch And His Internet Police

When you chose to post on the internet or on a blog you will always have some assholes that think because they can reply “anonymously” they can say and do whatever they want. I’ve had many “anonymous” reprobates post here in response to what I have to say but never have I thought that I should require people to use their real names and register with me before they could say something.

However Representative Couch seems to think differently:

Kentucky Representative Tim Couch filed a bill this week to make anonymous posting online illegal.

The bill would require anyone who contributes to a website to register their real name, address and e-mail address with that site.
Their full name would be used anytime a comment is posted.

If the bill becomes law, the website operator would have to pay if someone was allowed to post anonymously on their site. The fine would be five-hundred dollars for a first offense and one-thousand dollars for each offense after that.

So Mr. Couch thinks that somewhere in the Constitution is the power for him to dictate to me and millions of other website owners how to run our sites. Can he show this power to me?

I’m sure that there are some Americans that agree with him on this because they visit the plethora of web sites that do not effectively moderate their sites and let this sort of stuff go on. Here however we have a top notch moderator corps that keep this sort of crap to a minimum and counter attack when someone like those that Mr. Couch fears rear their little heads.

We even have a policy against personal information being posted to keep the mentally slow moonbats from harassing members of this site – which has happened in the past.

Besides, most websites and software have the ability to track people making comments and also have policies against harassment. So many people have static IPs these days and it seems to surprise people who act badly here how I could possibly know where they are and where they live after contacting their ISP with information and getting full cooperation. At that point they panic and are never heard from again.

So to Mr. Couch I say stick to what the Constitution actually gives you the power to handle. Believe me, you’ll have plenty of stuff on your plate if you did that. As for me, I’ll run my website as I see fit. And if you ever come after me to try and get compliance with this silly law should it pass I hope you are well armed.
