When the founding fathers repeatedly referred to God through various flowery and reverent terms in the Declaration of Independence, there was a reason for it. The reason is that they believed in God as men of deep Judeo-Christian faith. When George Washington prayed at Valley Forge he did not do so just because he thought that it might have been a novel idea. No, there was a deeper reason for it. That reason was his Christian faith.
If you are one of the millions of Americans who went to the bank one day, got a loan you could not afford, fell behind on your payments, eventually defaulted on your mortgage and either already have lost you home or on the verge of losing your home, would you understand the point of me handing you a mirror and telling you to look into the eyes of the person that was at fault? If you did, you’d be an American. Especially if you further accepted the responsibility for your actions and did not demand that someone else do something to correct your situation.
Years ago, if you wanted to buy something you paid in coins minted from, or at least backed by, precious metals. United States currency, for example, was backed by gold held by the government – hence the term “gold standardâ€. You’re dollar was backed by a dollars worth of gold which in theory you should have been able to get by simply turning in your dollar.
