The Surplus Fallacy

Marxists will say anything to get you to vote for them. They’ll claim President Bush (or anyone even slightly right of center for that matter) is trying to throw old people out on the street by destroying Social Security. They’ll claim that conservatives were trumpeting Weapons of Mass Destruction as the ONLY reason to take out Saddam Hussein, then claim that there were no WMDs even though every major intelligence agency AND their fellow travelers in the United Nations said they were there and the programs to create them have been found. They’ll claim that Republicans want to poison our children because they wont accept ridiculous and suffocating emission restrictions for industry.

And did you know we had a budget surplus under Bill Clinton? Did you know that we decreased the national debt? Listen to any liberal Democrat long enough and you will hear that line too. Did you know that under President Bush that surplus was gobbled up by greedy, oil soaked Republicans? Again, listen to any liberal Democrat long enough and you will hear that claim as well.

Well, let’s set the facts straight shall we? Let’s get them out in the open and let’s go straight to the source, The Bureau of the Public Debt.

Do you see what I see? Do you see that never, not once, not EVER during the Clinton years did we decrease the debt of the United States. How can that be? The liberal Democrats tell us that we were running a surplus and paying down the debt. Why would they lie?

Welcome to the world of reality. The reality is we NEVER had the budget surplus during the Clinton Presidency that causes liberals to swoon and wish for the days of old while having orgasmic rages. We ran a deficit EVERY single year and increased the public debt. The budget may have shown a surplus on paper, but after you add in supplemental spending packages, interest on the existing debt (which is part of the budget) and other after budget expenditures you can see that EVERY year we ran a deficit.

Liberals are demagoguing another “great lie”; a lie told so often that people will begin to believe it unless countered. This is the same game plan they have used for years to promote their left wing, bigger government philosophies. And this is the latest in a long line of “great lies”. They just keep getting bigger and bolder; kind of like the smell from old, moldy cheese. And like that aroma from that old cheese, the chant of the great lie isn’t easy to remove. It smells bad and sticks around no matter how many windows you open and no matter how much fresh air and truth you provide.

They call out about how “Bush squandered the surplus!” and on and on and on. News flash for all of you more interested in political power over the truth; there hasn’t been a “surplus” any time in the budget in the recent past. Not under Clinton, not under Bush Sr., not under Reagan and there isn’t going to be a surplus under President W. Bush either because spending is out of control in our government.

Make no mistake, I do not like the fact that even under Republicans who claim to have among their ranks conservatives and constitutionalists that the debt has skyrocketed. I do not like seeing $367 Billion in new debt accrued from the start of this year alone. I don’t want to hear one peep out of the left wingers reading this claiming that I am ignoring the deficit under a “conservative” President.

I am not. I am simply pointing out the “big lie” that liberals are trying to perpetrate to make the world seem different than what it really is. Please stop. This isn’t 1960 where you had only ABC, CBS and NBC telling the American people the news. This is 2005 and information is a lot more readily available. I know it REALLY scratches at your nerves to think that the people have so many sources of truth rather than the news you chose to feed us, but you’ll get over it. So sit down, shut up and hang on for the ride!
